Disinfection
Ozone
Ozone is one of the most powerful disinfectants that can be safely utilized by consumers.
Pros of ozone disinfection include:
- Extremely low maintenance with minimal replacement parts required
- Highly effective and low cost of operation
- System is effective regardless of water pH
- Cold water, like we have in Colorado, is beneficial to ozone treatment
- Completely chemical free
- May be used simultaneously as an oxidation system to remove iron, manganese,H2S and other oxidizables in water
Microbiologically unsafe water requires disinfection in order to make it safe for consumption. There are numerous methods to disinfect and/or remove pathogens (bacteria, viruses, cysts, etc.) present in water so that it is safe. These methods range from ultraviolet treatment to ozone treatment, ultrafiltration and chlorine disinfection. Each method offers pros and cons. We prefer non-chemical, low-maintenance options. Here's a description of the disinfetion options that we offer.
HW-O3 Systems
Our ozone systems are available in nearly a hundred different configurations ranging from small units (HW-03-300P) to large units (HW-O3-10GP). We offer air drying systems and oxygen concentrators to treat nearly any level of bacteria or other unsafe water condition that may be present. From systems with pumps to systems with built-in venturis, our ozone systems are the best available anywhere in the U.S. All systems are customer built exclusively for Highland Water and matched to each customer's unitque water treatment needs. Ultrafiltration
Ultrafiltration (UF) is a barrier technology that prevents bacteria, viruses, cysts and other pathogens in a water supply from entering a home or business. This technology utilizes a membrane that will filter down to 0.015 microns, which is substantially smaller than the pathogens. Utilizing an automatic flushing mechanisms, the pathogens which are prevented from entering the home or business are flushed down the drain automatically by the system.
Pros of UF systems include the following:
- Minimal replacement parts required
- Highly effective with low cost of operation
- Automatic operation
- Completely chemical free
- May be used simultaneously to remove turbidity and fine sediment present in water

Ultraviolet
Ultraviolet (UV) is a 'kill' technology that renders the outer shell of bacteria, viruses, cysts and other pathogens harmless. This technology works well only when flow rates are matched with UV lamp sizes and does not function well in high TDS and/or high mineral-laden water. UV systems degrade in effectiveness over time and it is critical to change UV bulbs at the prescribed point in order to insure their continued effectiveness.
Pros of UV systems include the following:
- Simple operation
- Low energy consumption
- Effective when properly designed
HW-UV Systems
Although UV systems have limited applicability in Colorado, due to other issues present in our local water sources, Highland Water offers UV systems ranging from 1 gallon-per-minute units up to 50 gallon-per-minute units. Our UV systems utilize high-intensity UV bulbs that insure maximum pathogen 'kill' when applied properly.
Chlorination
Like ultraviolet, chlorine is a 'kill' tecnology that renders pathogens harmless. The drawback of chlorination is the need to maintain the chemical in the associated tanks so that it is the proper strength to function as a disinfectant. In addition, chlorine is a caustic chemical so use of this disinfection technology requires post-chlorination removal filters, to eliminate the chlorine in the water source after it has done it's disinfection work. To simplify the chlorination approach, Highland Water offers highly effective tablet-style chlorination systems with small footprint contact tanks, followed by chlorine removal filters. Although we don't recommend chlorination (we have a strong anti-chemical water treatment philosophy), our HW-CL2 systems are effective when one of our other disinfection solutions won't work (which is rare).

- Low initial cost
- Historically proven technology
- May be used simultaneously as an oxidation system to remove iron, manganese,H2S and other oxidizables in water
HW-CL2 Systems
Our CL2 systems may be adjusted to accomodate variable doses of chlorine. In addition, our tablet system requires less maintenance or onsite 'supervision' than comparable liquid-based chlorination - disinfection systems.
